Instagram launches video to rival Vine app

Instagram 4.0 offers 15 seconds of video and filters for iOS and Android

Instagram Video

As expected, Video on Instagram has launched to rival the popular Vine app.

The Instagram app now comes with a movie camera icon so you can capture video as well as still photos. While Vine allows users to shoot up to six seconds of footage, Instagram lets you record more than twice as much at 15 seconds.

Like Vine, the video doesn't have to be one continuous shot, so you can make mini movies easily. See also: Will Instagram video weed out Vine?

Facebook owned Instagram said: "Over the past two and a half years, Instagram has become a community where you can capture and share the world’s moments simply and beautifully. Some moments, however, need more than a static image to come to life. Until now these stories have been missing from Instagram."

It wouldn't be Instagram without filters so fittingly there are 13 new filters made specifically for video. When posting videos you can select a scene from it to be the cover image meaning they're "beautiful even when they’re not playing", according to Instagram.

Videos posted to Instagram will show up in the feed just like photos do. The firm said visibility settings also work exactly the same. However, people can't be tagged in videos.

A Cinema feature aims to stabilise video when adding filters to it, but this is only available to iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 users.

Instagram 4.0 is now available for iOS (iPhone 3GS or later running iOS 5.0 or later) and Android (4.1 Jelly Bean or later). As usual, you can download the app for free.
