Vodafone 4G is live

Faster mobile data has arrived for Vodafone customers, with the telco announcing today it has switched on its 4G network in several cities across Australia.

Vodafone Hutchison Australia said it has switched on 4G in the metro areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Newcastle and Wollongong. However, until next month, the faster speeds are only available to existing customers who already have 4G devices, the telco said.

Vodafone follows Telstra and Optus in launching 4G speeds, but using 20MHz of spectrum in the 1800MHz band has doubled the capacity of the rival networks. Vodafone has said it will deploy 4G in stages, with plans to add 2000 additional mobile sites this year.

In trials, Vodafone said the 4G network achieved speeds up to 100Mbps. However, actual speeds are likely to be lower. Factors that affect speed include the number of users, local conditions, congestion, hardware, software, download source, general Internet traffic and access to enabled sites.

"Australians have told us loud and clear they want a fast and reliable network," Vodafone CEO Bill Morrow said in a statement. "We have invested heavily in our 3G and 3G+ networks and we know our wide-band 4G rollout is going to thrill our data-hungry customers."

Morrow said the launch is part of Vodafone's plan to win back customers who left due to network problems.

"We've been single-minded in our determination to improve our network, enhance our customer service and offer the best value mobile services in the country," he said.
