ITV Player launches new Android app, but only for Samsung Galaxy users

Samsung users get exclusive use of ITV Player until 31 August

ITV Player for Android

ITV has launched its new ITV Player catch-up service app on Android which is exclusively available for some Samsung Galaxy devices.

In a fixed term deal, only certain Samsung smartphones and tablets can download and use the new ITV Player app. Only Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Ace 2 and Galaxy Tab owners can get the updated ITV Player.

The exclusivity will run up until 31 August with the view to support as many Samsung devices as possible. The Korean tech giant said it will be available for the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 8.0 and Galaxy Mega.

James Micklethwait, Online Product Director at ITV, said: "We are very excited to have launched the new ITV Player app on Samsung devices.  The fragmentation of the Android ecosystem is well known therefore, as a commercial broadcaster, it makes sense for us to partner with the leading manufacturer of Android devices to further increase our technical knowledge of the operating system."

He said the broadcaster plans to launch the app onto other Android devices in the future. The new app adapts and scales to screen sizes, offers improved playback and support streaming over 3G/4G.

Samsung said: "Using the app it will be possible to browse recommended programmes, search for your favourite shows by TV channel or alphabetically on your mobile device, meaning you can enjoy ITV content On Demand and from any location."

Samsung Galaxy users with the right model can download the new ITV Player from the Google Play Store or Samsung Apps for free.
