Rumor roundup: What we might see at Nokia's Lumia launch event

Nokia has something up its sleeves for May 14, and that something has something to do with Lumias. We make some guesses.

Windows Phone fans could be hearing about some new hardware soon, courtesy of Nokia.

The company that's all-in on Windows Phone has announced a press event on May 14 in London. Official details are scarce, but the invitation promises a look at "what's next," and says the "Nokia Lumia story continues."

What can we expect? One possibility is the Nokia Lumia 928, a phone that's rumored to land on Verizon Wireless next month. Although a London event would be an odd venue for a Verizon announcement, the Lumia 928 could go on sale in overseas markets as well. Rumors claim that the phone will be slimmer than the existing Lumia 920. Bloomberg has reported that it will have a metal chassis, but The Verge says Nokia will stick with polycarbonate.

Nokia is also reportedly planning an aluminum-clad phone, codenamed Catwalk, along with a Windows Phone that uses the company's high-megapixel PureView technology. The Financial Times has reported that the latter handset may launch in July, so an announcement next month seems possible.

Nokia is also rumored to be working on a "phablet" to compete with Samsung's Galaxy Note, but Windows Phone 8 only supports screen resolutions up to 720. A jumbo phone from Nokia probably won't arrive before the next version of Windows Phone, which will reportedly accommodate 1080p displays larger than 5 inches.

Finally, there's a slight chance that Nokia could reveal a tablet running Windows RT or Windows 8. But while Microsoft has cleared the way for a low-cost Nokia tablet by accommodating lower screen resolutions in Windows, a May announcement still seems like a longshot.

Nokia scheduled its press event around the same time as the Google I/O developer conference, where the company will likely announce new hardware, and the Blackberry World conference. It's going to be a busy week in mobile tech, no matter what's in the cards.
