Tata offers cloud-based policy solution for mobile telcos

Tata Communications recently announced that it has released a new cloud-based solution that can help mobile network operators boost their revenues by simply tweaking some of their management policy.

Tata Communications said its Hosted Policy Engine is a cloud-based policy management solution that allows mobile operators to manage broadband traffic in real-time depending on subscriber usage. With this flexibility, mobile operators can launch targeted service packages to optimise network services and boost revenues with little capital investment.

The solution is timely given that mobile network operators (MNOs) are constantly challenged to justify their return on investment (ROI). Prior to this solution, Tata Communications said MNOs were constrained with solutions that are expensive to implement. With a cloud-based solution, which Tata Communications calls a first in the industry, operators can address the cost and flexibility issues.

One analyst said the cost issue is serious for mobile operators to the point that it hinders them from implementing new services.

"While the benefits of investing in next-generation policy management are clear - including more efficient use of network resources and the ability to create and deliver more innovative, personalised services - the cost and complexity of implementing these solutions remains a deterrent to many operators, particularly those in markets where Capex spending remains constrained," said Shira Levine, directing analyst, Infonetics.

Levine added that a hosted solution is a faster and more efficient approach for mobile operators who have budget constraints yet want to offer new services to boost their bottom line.

"Mobile operators are under increasing pressure to maximise ROI on the mobile broadband solutions they deploy for their customers, but the sheer complexity of the mobile environment can mean that managing these services is overwhelming both in terms of volume of transactions and scale of investment needed," said John Landau, senior VP, Technology and Services Evolution, Tata Communications.

"Our goal with the Hosted Policy Engine is to provide a pre-integrated best-of-breed policy engine that delivers economies of scale for MNOs thanks to our cloud-based approach. It offers the benefits of market leading solution components, but with significantly less Capex investment and no support requirements, opening up this solution to a large number of MNOs currently without satisfactory policy management," Landau added.

The solution also allows operators to define and share application best practices, and to establish other network management policies, such as hubbing and roaming. These are made possible with the solution's common platform and library of policy capabilities.
