Android most popular smartphone OS in Australia: Telsyte

There is a new leader in the Australian smartphone race, according to telco analyst firm, Telsyte.

In its latest emerging technology research, it claimed that handsets running Google's Android operating system have now outnumbered Apple's iOS-based iPhone devices for the first time.

Telsyte's Australian Smartphone Market Study 2013, which provides key market metrics, showed 44 per cent of smartphones being used in Australia are now running Android -- ahead of the 43 per cent running iOS.

Together, both operating systems dominate the local smartphone market consisting of more than ten million handsets currently used by consumers for both personal and business use. Telsyte research director, Foad Fadaghi, said Android has caught up because it is available on a much wider range of handsets and is almost equal in terms of features and third-party applications. "Our new research shows that the lower prices, faster product cycles and carrier support have helped Android become the leading platform," he said.

On the other hand, the report indicated Apple has the highest repeat purchase intention amongst consumers, with iPhone upgrades significantly driving re-contracting with carriers. It also showed high lock-in rates for some vendors, making the market line-ball in terms of forecasts move forward, with the scuffle for the remainder of people not yet using smartphones still up for grabs.
