Amazon recognises Emergency Aus app

The 'Emergency Aus' mobile application, developed by Gridstone and Ripe Intel, has taken out the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Warrior Award for Outstanding Business Value in Australia at the 2012 AWS Technical Innovator Awards.

Emergency App merges national emergency information from over 20 official sources and observations submitted by the public so residents, tourists and visitors have free real-time access to warnings, incident reports, and Sensory observations.

It covers bushfires, structure fires, planned burns, floods, storms and cyclones, smoke hazards, material spills, motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, rescues, earthquakes, and tsunamis.

"Emergencies, by their nature, as often sudden and widely-impacting events, and the reliability and scalability of AWS enables Emergency Aus to meet the unpredictable spikes on demand when these events occur," Gridstone director, Lembit Pikkat, said.

The business value award recognises an organisation that has realised significant return on investment (ROI) on the AWS Cloud through cost savings, new business opportunities or revenue growth, better service delivery, or overall efficiency and business improvements.

"We are impressed with the innovative approach that Emergency AUS has taken to use AWS services to build a platform to capture, process and present information -- an approach that makes a significant contribution to the way the community can deal with emergencies in Australia," Amazon Australia country manager, Ed Lenta, said.

Emergency Aus is available for free via the Apple App Store and Google Play.

A premium version of the app will be launched by Christmas, which will provide extended functionality at a cost.
