SmartCall app for smartphones to unleash free calls over Wi-Fi
Virgin Media has announced its SmartCall app, enabling users to make free calls from their smartphone over a Wi-Fi connection.
In what Virgin Media is calling a 'UK first' customers will be able to use unlimited calls from their home phone talk plan on a smartphone over Wi-Fi. The service is called SmartCall and will even work abroad. See also: Virgin Media offers unlimited data for £10 a month.
Graeme Oxby, executive director of mobile and home phone at Virgin Media, said: "SmartCall will stretch the home telephone cord all the way to wherever you might be, whether in a coffee shop in Cornwall or on a beach in Bali."
The firm said all users need is a Virgin Media home phone, a smartphone and a Wi-Fi connection. It will be available to select customers over the next few weeks and launch fully in early 2013.
The SmartCall app will automatically detect whether a call is included in the users home phone talk plan. As standard, Virgin Media plans include unlimted free weekend calls to UK landlines and Virgin Mobiles.
