Photos of iPad 3 with Lightning emerge, could be unveiled by Apple today

Apple could launch a revamped Lightning compatible 9.7in iPad alongside the iPad mini today

Photographs of what is claimed to be an iPad 3 (officially called new iPad) with Apple's new Lightning connector have surfaced online, suggesting that the company could unveil a minor update to its 9.7in iPad at its special event today, alongside the expected iPad mini.

A revamped iPad, which we have dubbed iPad 3.5, has been floating around the rumour mill for a few weeks now, with reports suggesting that the tablet could also have an improved FaceTime camera and be compatible with the UK's EE LTE 4G service.

The new photographs, which were published on Apple.pro, show a 9.7in iPad with a Lightning dock connector like the one introduced with the iPhone 5 and new iPods in September.

9To5Mac reports that the updated iPad will be available at the same price as the third-generation iPad, and will have the same storage options.

Photos of an alleged new iPad screen with a larger FaceTime camera hole have also hit the web, suggesting that Apple will include a larger sensor in its next full-size iPad. Whether this is the revamped tablet expected to be unveiled tonight or the iPad 4 predicted to arrive in March 2013 is not yet clear.

You can watch our live feed of the iPad mini event at 6pm here.
