Apple's iPad mini to be WiFi only alongside new, UK 4G iPad?

The Guardian claims that 'multiple sources' believe that the iPad mini won't have 3G to 'limit the top price'

New reports have added evidence to previous speculation that Apple's rumoured iPad mini will be WiFi only, and that Apple is planning to launch a minor update to its 10in iPad that will bring the iPhone 5's Lightning connector to the device, and will make it compatible with the UK's 4G network.

The Guardian reports that 'industry sources' have told the paper that they think Apple will not offer a 3G version of the iPad mini. "That would allow Apple to produce it comparatively cheaply and to limit the top price of the product, while retaining mobile broadband connectivity for its pricier iPad line," the report says.

This is not the first we've heard of the iPad mini not getting 3G. In September, Allan Yogasingam, technical research manager at UBM Techinsights, said that the iPad mini would be WiFi only to keep the price down.

The Guardian says that 'multiple sources' have claimed that the iPad mini is imminent, and we've heard that invitations for its special event could be send out today. It's expected that the device could be hitting the shops at the beginning of November.

Accessories maker Knomo has reportedly said that it will have an iPad mini case ready "within days".

Meanwhile, Apple is planning to refresh its third-generation iPad with a version that is compatible with EE's 4G 1800MHx network here in the UK, sources told the Guardian. This iPad update would likely introduce the Lightning connector to the tablet too.

A minor update to the iPad has been thought to be on the cards for a while now, and most recently, a developer spotted an unknown iPad model with an A6 chip that points to a new version of Apple's popular 9.7in tablet.
