Apple sells 5 million iPhone 5s in first weekend

Apple Maps issues doesn't put punters off getting the iPhone 5

Apple has announced it sold over 5 million of its iPhone 5 smartphone in its first three days on sale.

The firm sold the incredible amount of iPhone 5s despite the device launching in just nine countries. It seems that the criticisms Apple received over its new Maps app didn't put the punters off getting a new iPhone. See also: Apple named coolest brand in the UK.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple said: "Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,"

"While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."

Apple said more than 100 million iOS devices, the iPad and iPod Touch as well as the iPhone, have been updated to the latest version, iOS 6. Apple calls it 'the world's most advanced mobile operating system'.

The iPhone 5 will launch in 22 more countries on 28 September including Spain, Finland, Ireland, Poland and New Zealand. Apple said it will be in more than 100 countries by the end of the year.
