Apple announces iOS 6 release date: Sep 19th

iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users can upgrade to iOS 6 on Sep 19th

Apple has revealed at the iPhone 5 launch that iOS 6 will be released on September 19th.

The iPhone maker's next generation operating system will be available to download from next week, Apple said at the launch of the iPhone 5. The upgrade is free for iPhone, iPad and iPod users.

iOS 6 was initially unveiled in June at Apple's worldwide developer conference (WWDC) in June where it said the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, the new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch (fourth generation) will all get iOS 6. The iPhone 5 will, of course, come pre-loaded with iOS 6 when it is released.

Apple's iOS 6 brings many new features to the firm's devices including better Facebook integration, its own Maps app with turn-by-turn navigation and an improved version of Safari.

New apps include Passbook for storing things like boarding passes, loyalty cards and tickets and Do Not Disturb option which mutes push notifications and stops the screen from turning on, for example.

Siri, Apple's personal assistant has new capabilities such as opening apps, retrieving sport scores and posting to Facebook and Twitter with dictation. It also has an 'eyes-free' mode meaning the iPhone can be controlled purely by voice. Apple has confirmed that this will work in the UK.
