Most consumers would choose iPhone 5 over iPad mini - survey

Almost 80% of Americans would opt for the new iPhone instead of the iPad mini, according to a new survey

A new survey indicates that Apple releasing the iPhone 5 alongside an iPad mini would be a bad move for the company, as most consumers won't be able to afford both devices, and, if faced with the choice, will opt for the iPhone 5.

Cult of Mac reports that the survey, conducted by leading US coupon code site CouponCodes4u, shows that 78 per cent of Americans would buy the new iPhone and not the 7in iPad. That's despite 77 per cent of those people already owning an iPhone.

The survey asked the 1,873 participants why they would choose the iPhone, and 46 per cent said that they thought the iPad mini was "pointless". A total of 39 per cent said that they need a new iPhone more than a smaller iPad.

Of the 22 per cent of participants who said they would choose the iPad mini over the new iPhone, more than half revealed that they already own an iPad. 69 per cent said that they didn't think the iPhone 5 would be different enough to the iPhone 4S.

It is widely believed that the iPhone 5, and possibly the iPad mini, will be unveiled by Apple at a special event on 12 September. Some analysts believe that the event will see the "biggest launch in history".
