Reference to 9-pin dock connector for iPhone 5 spotted in iOS 6

New photographs of the rumoured iPhone 5's tiny dock connector have also emerged

A reference to a 9-pin dock connector has been spotted in the iOS 6 beta, adding further evidence to the rumour that Apple's iPhone 5 will have a smaller dock connector.

We've been hearing speculation about a smaller dock connector for some time now, with some reports suggesting that the current 30-pin design will be reduced to 19-pins, or possibly only 8-pins. But now, 9To5 Mac has discovered an iOS hardware reference in the iOS 6 beta called "9Pin".

The smaller dock connector may not just be confined to the iPhone, though. iMore reported this week that Apple is planning to update all of its iOS devices at a 12 September special event, including the iPhone 5, a new iPod nano and iPod touch, an iPad mini and an updated version of the current iPad.

Meanwhile, new photographs of an alleged iPhone 5 have surfaced, comparing the sixth-generation device with its predecessor, the iPhone 4S, reports Cult Of Mac, which spotted the photographs on French website Nowehereelse.fr.

One photograph compares the bottom of the iPhone 4S with the leaked iPhone 5, revealing that the dock connector could be less than half the size of the 30-pin design, and that the headphone jack will be moved to the bottom of the device.

There is also a metallic ring around the port, which could indicate that Apple is planning to introduce a MagSafe-like dock connector.

The iPhone 5 is also expected to have a two-tone metal back and taller display.
