Confidential document shows Samsung compared Galaxy S to iPhone
Samsung deliberately tried to make its Galaxy S smartphone more like the Apple iPhone, it has been revealed.
A document being used in the latest Apple vs Samsung court trial as evidence has been leaked. It shows how Samsung evaluated its own smartphone with the attributed of the iPhone in 2010. See also: Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Apple iPhone 5 comparison review.
The lengthy 'highly confidential' document called 'relative evaluation report on S1, iPhone' has been uploaded to Scribd and is authored by Samsung's product engineering team. It goes through, feature by feature, comparing the Galaxy S to the iPhone.
In each case, whether the calculator or the web browser, the interface is compared with the iPhone's and suggestions are made to improve Samsung's efforts. See also: Group test: What's the best smartphone?
In one graphical interface comparison the document comments that there's a: "strong impression that iPhone's icon concept was copied" with the suggestion to "remove a feeling that iPhone's menu icons are copied by differentiating design."
Samsung told AllThingsD: "these are typical competitive analyses routinely undertaken by many companies in many industries – including Apple. Samsung stands by its culture of continuous improvement and innovation."
The document does seem to be in favour of Apple's claim that Samsung 'slavishly' copied the iPhone. But the firm will still need to convince the court that Samsung infringes it exact design patents which Samsung denies it does.

hoggleboggle said: Nowhere is this an indication that Samsung wanted to emulate the iphone it simply highlights where samsung believed the iphone had strengths over their galaxy s I would expect Apple to have exactly the same sort of document for every major rival phone in preparation for the iphone 5 A design team isnt doing its job if it isnt analysing the competition like this
