Apple adds UK cities to 3D maps in iOS 6

Birmingham, Manchester get flyover 3D data

Apple has expanded its 3D maps by adding more cities from the UK, US, France and Canada to its new Maps app, which will appear in iOS 6 when it launches this autumn.

Birmingham, Manchester and Toronto are among the cities that have gained "flyover" 3D data.

It's worth pointing out that New York has yet to be added to the list, possibly due to concerns over terrorism, notes Apple Insider.

Apple released the iOS 6 beta 4 to developers yesterday and appears to have removed more traces of Google from the iPhone and iPad operating system. Apple has now dropped the Google backed YouTube as well as the Maps app which it has replaces with Apple's own iOS 6 3D Maps.

The iOS6 3D Maps is one of the focal features for the new iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and Apple is said to be working closely with digital maps provider TomTom to provide users with vector-based map elements that make graphics and text smooth, and panning, tilting and zooming fluid, according to Apple.

Google launched Google Earth 7 on 26 July but a side-by-side comparison of Apple's version of Maps found in the iO6 beta and the new Google Earth app for the iOS has revealed that Google Earth's map is in a lower resolution than Apple's.

The elimination of Google from Apple's new products brings the war between the two companies to new heights. Apple seems to be continuing the work of late CEO Steve Jobs who famously accused Google of copying Apple when it devised the Android operating system. Jobs said he would go to "thermonuclear war" over it.

Google is working on a new YouTube app that will be available to users on the App store.
