Apple releases iOS 6 beta 3 to developers

The latest beta version of iOS 6 includes Maps app changes and signals the end of @me.com emails

Apple has released iOS 6 beta 3 to developers, alongside Xcode Developer Preview 3 and Apple TV Software beta 3.

The third beta version of the next Apple mobile operating system was made available to developers on Monday, just three weeks after the second beta was released.

iOS 6 beta 3, build 10A5355d, includes settings changes in the new Maps app, which allows users to change the volume of the navigation voice, set distances to display in miles or kilometres, set map labels to display either in the local language or always in English and set map label size to either "normal" or "large," reports MacRumours.

The release of the new beta also revealed that Apple is beginning to move users from the me.com email addresses used by MobileMe users to new email addresses that end icloud.com.

"Users signing up for new Apple IDs, or enabling Mail on their iCloud account for the first time, will automatically receive an @icloud.com email address instead of a me.com email address," says Apple in the iOS 6 update's change log. "iCloud users with @me.com addresses that have been used with iOS 6 beta 3 will receive an @iCloud.com email address that matches their @me.com address."

Developers have also noted that roadwork and traffic accidents have begun showing up in the Maps app, the Answer and Decline buttons for FaceTime calls have returned, iMessage on iPad is now accepting a phone number as a valid contact, there is more 3D Flyover coverage in Maps, some minor changes have been made in Safari, and the auto-brightness now has a gradual change. New icons have also emerged in the Mail app for Junk, Trash and Archive, and the 4th gen iPod touch now has a VIP inbox.

iOS 6 is set to launch this autumn, pointing to a likely coinciding launch of the sixth-generation iPhone.
