Absinthe iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak downloaded 1 million times

The first untethered jailbreak for the third gen iPad was announced on Friday

Absinthe 2.0, the first untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1, has been downloaded almost 1 million times over the weekend, Chronic Dev Team has announced.

The developers behind the new jailbreak took to Twitter to announce that 973,086 devices had been newly jailbroken since the launch of Absinthe 2.0, of which 211,401 were third-generation iPads.

Absinthe 2.0 can be used for the third-generation iPad, iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS, the iPad 2, the original iPad and the iPod touch. It's the first untethered jailbreak for the third-generation iPad, which means users can reboot their devices without plugging them into external computers. Untethered jailbreaks allow devices to remain jailbroken after reboot.

The Chronic Dev Team, part of the Jailbreak Dream Team, announced the new jailbreak at the Hack in the Box conference in Amsterdam on Friday, using the "one more thing" trick employed by Steve Jobs at Apple keynotes.

The jailbreakers predicted that their software would be downloaded about a million times at a press conference following the announcement, but it looks like Absinthe 2.0 could be heading for an even higher number of downloads.
