Samsung agrees to buy cloud entertainment service mSpot

Samsung will pre-install MSpot's entertainment services on its mobile devices

Samsung Electronics on Wednesday said it has agreed to buy mobile cloud service provider mSpot, which will help it expand cloud and entertainment offerings on its smartphones and tablets.

The acquisition will provide cloud-based music, video and radio services to Samsung device users, the company said in a statement. Entertainment services provided by mSpot will be pre-installed on newly announced Samsung mobile devices, the company said.

Samsung's mobile device offerings include Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The company recently announced its latest Galaxy S III smartphone, and will start shipping the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1-inch tablet on May 13.

MSpot Music allows users to store, sync and stream music from the cloud to devices. The mSpot movie service allows users to buy movies, which are then streamed to mobile devices and PCs.

Tablet and smartphone makers have taken a page from Apple and are building cloud services to go along with the hardware. Amazon offers cloud-based storage and entertainment streaming services with its Kindle Fire tablet, while companies like Lenovo and Acer are building cloud services from the ground to offer storage, shopping and entertainment services on their Android smartphones and tablets.

Samsung did not say how much it was paying for mSpot or when the deal is expected to be finalized.
