Telefonica Digital, owner of O2, has launched its TU Me app giving iPhone users free calls and text messages.
Avoids contract allowance by using Wi-Fi or 3G
The free app for iPhone offers email, calls and text messages for free over a 3G or Wi-Fi network. TU Me combines all the data into one ‘timeline’ and is available to customers of any mobile network.
"We’ve seen the growing popularity of communications apps on smartphones but we believe we’ve gone one better with TU Me using our knowledge and insights of how people use their devices," said Stephen Shurrock, chief commercial officer at Telefonica Digital.
"TU Me puts all your communications needs into one place, for free, and is a great way for people to stay in touch with those close to them. It’s also a testament to the innovation, speed and agility within Telefonica Digital."
Users can ‘exchange text messages, make calls, leave voice messages, share photos and location information’ all from one app. Data is stored in the cloud so it is never lost regardless of whether the user loses or changes mobile phone.
The app will even work abroad as long as there is a Wi-Fi connection or data roaming is enabled. The only catch is that there are ‘daily fair-use limits’ and the cloud storage is free for the first year only.
Telefonica said an Android version of the TU Me app will follow shortly and will be developed in the future, adding functionality.
