Samsung confirms Exynos quad-core chip for Galaxy S3

Straight from the horse's mouth a week before launch

Samsung has revealed that its next Galaxy device, the Galaxy S3, will be powered by its own quad-core processor.

The firm has announced the Exynos 4 Quad processor and said it will feature in the next Galaxy device. The 32nm chip is based on the ARM Cortex A9 quad-core architecture and has 'performance capabilities exceeding 1.4GHz'.

PC Advisor will be at the Samsung Galaxy S3 launch live, so make sure you bookmark the page and visit it again at 7pm BST on 3 May.

Samsung said: "Already in production, the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May. Samsung’s Exynos 4 Quad is also sampling to other major handset makers." Visit Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X comparison review.

A performance increase of double is touted for the Exynos 4 compared to the 45nm Exynos 4 dual-core version with a 20 percent less power.  It is apparently great for 3D games, video editing, and calculation-intensive simulation.

Hankil Yoon, senior vice president of Product Strategy at Samsung Mobile said: "Samsung’s next Galaxy device, which will be officially announced soon, offers uncompromised performance and ground breaking multi-tasking features, thanks to Exynos 4 Quad’s powerful performance and efficient energy management technology."

Suggesting good battery life on the Galaxy S3 Samsung said it has used "hot-plug functionality to support on-off switching for each core as well as the per-core dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS)," This reportedly means dramatic reduction in power consumption by using different levels of voltage and frequency as the workload changes.

Vodafone, O2 and The Carphone Warehouse have all confirmed they will sell the Galaxy S3 which will be finally revealed next week. We'll be there bringing you live coverage but check out what we know already via our Samsung Galaxy S3 release date, specs and rumour round-up.
