Apple and Samsung will attend patent settlement meeting

Dispute could come to a rational end

Apple and Samsung have both agreed to meet and discuss a patent settlement.

The meeting will take place in San Francisco within the next 90 days and involve company CEOs and general counsel.  The two mobile giants will attempt to settle long standing patent disputes over smartphones and tablets.

A statement from Samsung said: "At the direction of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Samsung and Apple have agreed to participate in a Magistrate Judge Settlement Conference.  This settlement conference will take place within 90 days, with the presence of each party’s chief executive officer and general counsel."

Apple and Samsung have been locking horns over various patents and products in countries around the globe for what seems like forever. The former claiming that the latter had infringed design patents related to the iPhone and iPad.

Both, at various times in different places, have managed to get temporary sales bans on products. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was banned in Germany which led to the firm creating an alternative model.

It will be interesting to see whether the settlement conference ends the argument once and for all.
