Nokia adds NFC to Lumia 610

Aims NFC at the masses in affordable handset

Nokia has announced a near field communication (NFC) enabled version of the Lumia 610.

The new version of the smartphone will launch firstly with mobile operator Orange in the third quarter. The Lumia 610 NFC is the eighth device which Nokia has launched with the technology in the last two years.

Nokia said: "The Lumia 610 is the most affordable smartphone in the Lumia range, making it the perfect introduction to both Windows Phone and NFC for a younger, broader audience."

To make the smartphone possible, Nokia added the necessary NFC software stack to the Windows Phone operating system and installed the hardware. The phone is set up for contactless tasks like ticketing and payments.

Nokia said the Lumia 610 NFC has been certified for contactless payments both for MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave. It is also possible to use the phone with NFC accessories like tags and headsets.

Ilari Nurmi, head of Smart Devices product marketing at Nokia said: "Nokia continues to lead the field in NFC with this latest implementation on the Windows Phone platform, in which we have the full support of Orange,"

"We're bringing NFC right across our portfolio, and together with our ever-growing range of NFC accessories we're making it easy for people to connect via a single tap. We're also enabling operators and other service providers to build NFC payment and ticketing solutions on top of our smartphones."

Earlier today Nokia confirmed a software problem with its Lumia 900 affecting connectivity. The company is offering customers a $100 credit on their phone bill and will release a fix next week.
