"Significant" wage increase coming from Apple factory owner

Hon Hai plans to raise the wages of its employees in Taiwan

The parent company to Foxconn, who manufacturer many Apple products, including the iPhone, says it plans to raise the wages of its employees in Taiwan. The company says that the wage increases will come in July and are designed to retain and attract talent as it expands its buisness.

In a TV interview Hon Hai chairman Terry Gou said that his company is reviewing pay scales for its employees in Taiwan as the public is faced with a rising cost of living since the government removed a mechanism to partially freeze domestic fuel prices, according to a report from Taipei Times. Hon Hai spokesmanSimon Hsing said the size of the salary increase was still to be agreed, but emphasised that it would be significant, according to Dow Jones.

Wages have been on the rise since several Foxconn employees committed suicidein the factories in 2010. There have been many criticisms of conditions at the Foxconn factories, most recentlyafter an investigation carried out by the Fair Labour Association (FLA) revealed 'significant issues.

Apple CEO Tim Cook is reported to havevisited a Foxconn factoryon 30 March, the same day that the FLA's investigation findings were published.
