Samsung claims 5 million Galaxy Note sales

One million sold each month of the smartphone and tablet hybrid

Samsung has announced that it has sold 5 million units of is Galaxy Note. See also Samsung Galaxy Note review.

The figure fits nicely with the 5 months that have passed since the device went on sale last October. Samsung puts the smartphone and tablet hybrid's success down to its 5.3-inch Super AMOLED screen and S-Pen stylus.

Samsung said: "Thanks to the fast selling Galaxy Note, Samsung Electronics has gained about two thirds of the South Korean mobile phone market share, making Samsung the leading mobile phone provider in Korea in addition to China, France, Spain and others."

However, we're taking the hefty number with a pinch of salt as Samsung hasn't detailed whether the sales are to the channel or actual customer purchases. The firm was notably hazy about its sales of its flagship Galaxy S II smartphone.

Samsung will be rolling out an upgrade for the Galaxy Note to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the second quarter. The operating system will come with exclusive apps tailored to the Galaxy Note and its stylus.
