Report: Zynga to acquire Draw Something developer for $200 million

Zynga on Wednesday acquired OMGPop

Zynga on Wednesday acquired OMGPop, the company behind the insanely popular Draw Something ( Macworld rated 4 out of 5 mice ) app, for a reported $200 million, according to a report from All Things Digital, which cites "people with first-hand knowledge." Zynga had already announced it would hold a press conference later Wednesday at 3 p.m. Eastern (noon Pacific). See also How to make a stylus and Draw Something tips and tricks

Draw Something, which All Things Digital says has been earning $250,000 per day after Apple's cut--is a turn-based, Pictionary-style game. The game is currently the top paid app in the App Store. Though not a word game per se, the game certainly fits in with others on Zynga's roster, such as Words With Friends, Hanging With Friends, and Scramble With Friends; all three--like Draw Something--are two-player asynchronous friendly guessing games.

Words With Friends wasn't originally a Zynga creation, either. Zynga acquired its developer, Newtoy, in December 2010, getting games Chess With Friends and We Rule in the process.

Zynga initially rose to fame--and wealth--with Facebook-dominating games like FarmVille, FrontierVille, FishVille, and PetVille.

We'll update this story after Zynga's press conference later Wednesday.
