Samsung Galaxy S3 Rumours

NEW - Updated 16/4/12: Samsung to reveal Galaxy S3 on 3 May - Samsung has released invitations to a press briefing on 3 May for its 'next Galaxy' device. Although the invitation does not mention that the device is the Galaxy S III, it's what's being tipped across the web. Rumours about the illustrious smartphone have been in full flow recently after the firm decided not to unveil the phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The tag line of the invite simply says "come and meet the next Galaxy device". PC Advisor received the invitation [see above] this morning which confirms the event will take place in the evening of 3 May in central London.

Initially it was widely rumoured that we would see the Samsung Galaxy S3 at Mobile World Congress this year, but alas, that has been and gone and there was no successor the Galaxy S2 smartphone.

It appears Samsung have noticed the hype growing around the Samsung Galaxy S3 and will now launch the phone at an event solely dedicated to the smartphone.

Speaking about the the Samsung Galaxy S3's no-show at MWC this year an official spokesperson for Samsung said “The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product.”

KnowYourMobile.com is reporting that the head of Samsung China, Kim Young-Ha, has let it slip that the Galaxy S3 could be released in the UK in April. They go on to state that multiple Korean sources have quoted Kim Young-Ha, and that the Galaxy S3 launch is likely to be brought forward from May to April.

Android enthusiasts Eurodroid have been sent a tip from a reader that the Oxford Street branch of Phones 4U has a "massive SAMSUNG logo along with the date 30/03/2012". Although this is far from conclusive evidence that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be launched on March 30th, it does make you think 'what else could Samsung be launching?' MWC 2012 was peppered with new Galaxy Tabs, so you wouldn't have thought it was another tablet. We're quietly optimistic about this rumour.

Updated on 26/4/12 - Samsung confirms Exynos quad-core chip for Galaxy S3

Samsung has revealed that its next Galaxy device, the Galaxy S3, will be powered by its own quad-core processor. The firm has announced the Exynos 4 Quad processor and said it will feature in the next Galaxy device. The 32nm chip is based on the ARM Cortex A9 quad-core architecture and has 'performance capabilities exceeding 1.4GHz'.

Samsung said: "Already in production, the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May. Samsung’s Exynos 4 Quad is also sampling to other major handset makers."

Updated on 19/4/12 - Galaxy S3 will have a 12MP Camera - Kings of prototype thievery, Gizmodo, claim to have laid its light fingers on the new Samsung Galaxy S3. To be more precise it is Gizmodo Brazil that is claiming to have the deice. What the Brazilian boys (and girls) are reporting is that the new flagship smartphone will pack a massive 12MP rear facing camera. Not only will the new Korean smartphone have a mega camera, but it is claimed that it will be even thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Updated on 17/4/12 - It will be the official phone of the 2012 Olympics - The popular technology block BGR is spreading the rumour that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be the official phone of the 2012 London Olympics and this is why Samsung has chosen London as the location for the smartphone's launch. The blog goes on to state that it has been "told" the Galaxy S3 will be available in black and white, have a "1080p HD display, a quad-core Exynos processor and integrated 4G LTE" - the smartphone will be available to buy in two sizes; 16GB and 32GB. Sounds very feasible to us.

Updated on 17/4/12 - It will only be a minor update - Cnet.co.uk claims to have spoken to a "source in the UK telecoms industry" who has likened the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S3 launch to the iPhone to iPhone 4S upgrade. The article also cites Samsung's own words saying the "Galaxy Note is a the spiritual successor to the S2" and the source also warns that we shouldn't expect the S3 to be called the S3, mentioning instead the smartphone's codename 'Bali'. Finally the article suggests the S3 will come with a 1.8GHz chip and 2GB of RAM.

The US website Mobilecityonline.com has the Galaxy S III, model name GT-I9300, up for pre-order for a price of $799.

If Mobilecityonline’s details are correct, the Galaxy S III will come with a 4.6-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen with a resolution of 720 x 1280. This means a ‘retina’ quality pixel density of 319ppi.

Known specifications include an Exynos 4212 quad-core 1.8GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 12MP rear facing camera, a 2MP front facing camera and 4G LTE connectivity.

It will also have version 4.0 of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface and we understand that it will run Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Visit Samsung Galaxy S III appears for pre-order.

Wireless charging

Ok, if all of these rumours up until now are true, then we're officially in love with the Samsung Galaxy S3. But when we caught wind that the S3 might come equipped with the ability to wirelessly charge then we very nearly punched the air in prospective and premature joy - and that's exactly what technology website theverge is reporting after spotting it in Korean publication DDaily.

In the report from DDaily, Samsung is said to have developed its own patented wireless charging method that doesn't even require the phone to be physically touching the charging surface. It is claimed that the smartphone can be up to "a meter or two away". However, it is still not clear if a charging station will come as part of the phone's package or whether it will need to be purchased separately - the rumour is quite clear that the device itself will come with the ability to charge wireless straight out of the box though.

 Waterproof?

Technology website TechRadar is reporting that Electronics waterproofing outfit P2i is in talks with "large Korean manufacturers about making their phones water-resistant".

Eric Cohill, COO for P2i said "There is major interest from carriers in the US to discuss criteria to help against water ingestion for customers. We're working with major carriers to create a standard of performance [for water repellence] which can give OEMs something to work to when creating smartphones. There are several hundred pound gorillas in the phone industry, we've got the 'fruity companies' and the big Korean brands, and they're all becoming interested as they don't want to be second best in the market."

S3 release dateDesign

Here's an image that mobile phone website phoneArena.com has reportedly been sent by an anonymous "tipster". If this image proves to be true, it will mean the S3 will have no front facing physical buttons, which in turn will free up room for a larger screen. Interesting...

Samsung Galaxy S3 leaked image

A poster style image of the Samsung Galaxy S3 has appeared on the social sharing site Reddit. Interestingly, the image has the launch date of March 22nd too. Technology website Cnet have pooh-poohed the leaked image claimed the phone looks like a slightly tweaked Galaxy S2 with a Galaxy Nexus screen pasted on top. However, it still looks pretty cool to us, so here's the leaked image in question - we'll let you make up your own minds about its legitimacy.

Yet another leaked image...

Samsung Galaxy S3 leaked pictureHere's a leaked image that phoneArena.com is placing a lot of weight on. The reason the website is giving this leaked picture such respect is because of the code name that is attached to it - GT-19300 - phoneArena.com correctly pointed out that the Galaxy S2's code name was GT-19100 and the Galaxy Nexus was GT-19250. The next phone that Samsung are due to launch is the S3, which as common sense tells you should have a higher number. The picture below also has Android's Ice Cream Sandwich and a big screen (possibly 4.6-inch) as rumoured. All good points.

However, us cynics here at PC Advisor think it's nothing more than a big pretender - it looks far too ugly to be launched as anyone's new flagship phone.

Where can I buy the Samsung Galaxy S3?

Mobile operators Vodafone and O2 have already confirmed that they will be selling the Galaxy device that launches on 3 May. The Carphone Warehouse also accidentally revealed that it will be selling the new Samsung handset, but managed to go one step further by actually listing the device as the Samsung Galaxy S3.
