New iPads shipping from Chengdu, China

Customers who placed pre-orders receiving delivery notifications

The first delivery notifications for customers who have pre-ordered the new iPad are being sent out.

Seth Weintraub of 9to5Mac has received a delivery notification confirming that the new iPad will be delivered to him via UPS on 16 March.

Two things are interesting about the delivery note - firstly, the device is referred to as "iPad with Wi-Fi 16GB - Black (3rd generation).

Secondly, the tracking information provided by UPS shows that the unit was prepared for delivery in Chengdu, China - the location of a Foxconn plant where a deadly explosion occured in May 2011.

According to Apple Insider, other customers are receiving notifications too, with similar reports on Engadget too.

Those of you in the UK who haven't pre-ordered a new iPad yet, though, don't stand any chance of having the device delivered on 16 March as all models now show a wait of two to three weeks on the Apple website.

So, if you want to get your hands on a new iPad next Friday, your only remaining options is to get yourself in a queue on Friday morning - perhaps even earlier.
