Apple will take the wraps off the iPad 3 in New York next week, a television news report in the US has claimed. Follow the Apple iPad 3 launch live with our liveblog from the event: Live: Apple iPad 3 launch.
News network CNBC made the claims in a live report this morning, picked up by Apple Insider, citing anonymous sources.
Apple traditionally unveils new iOS devices in California, its home state, with the exception of the Verizon iPhone which was launched in New York in January 2011.
The CNBC report also claimed that the iPad 3 will have a quad-core processor and 4G capabilities and will go on sale Friday 9 March.
Most Apple pundits have been anticipating a 7 March announcement followed by a launch on 16 March in the US at least.
The quad-core processor theory has been dismissed by many, with an upgraded A5 processor with two cores expected, though 4G capabilities have been strongly rumoured already.
The report seemingly made no reference to a Retina display or Siri, though. CNBC also made the claims on Twitter, saying: "ALERT: Quad-Core iPad 3 with 4G LTE to be unveiled in New York next week. -Sources ."
UPDATE 1715GMT: It appears Dalrymple was right and CNBC wrong - Apple has just sent out the official invites to an event on 7 March in San Francisco.
