Vodafone and Visa to launch NFC mobile payments

Companies in discussion with banks, retailers and transport networks

Vodafone and Visa have established a partnership to offer mobile payments.

The mobile phone firm and credit card processing companies will develop a Vodafone-branded service, which will be offered to NFC mobile phone users within Vodafone's customer base. The payments processing service will run on Visa's network.

Payments can be made by swiping an enabled smartphone near a payments terminal in stores or on transport.

The new offering will be based on the Visa prepaid account. It will be launched in the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Turkey, with other countries added later in the year.

Once the prepaid, Vodafone-branded service is live, it will be offered to a range of financial institutions, retailers, transport and utility firms.

Vittorio Colao, chief executive at Vodafone, said the project "represents the next stage of the smartphone revolution". The service "offers our customers the speed, simplicity and convenience of managing their everyday transactions with a single wave or tap of their smartphone", he added.
