Two thirds of Brits fear being without mobile contact

Nomophobia surges in four years

Nomophobia, or the fear of being out of mobile phone contact, is on the up in the UK, says SecurEnvoy.

Research of 1,000 Brits by the tokenless authentication firm, revealed two thirds admit to suffering from the phobia. Unsurprisingly, younger mobile phone users are more nomophobic compared to other age groups with 77 percent of 18 to 24s and 68 percent of those aged 25 to 34 admitting to the fear. However, a third of 55 and overs also said they were nomophobic.

More than two in five (41 percent) of Brits own two mobile phones or more in a bid to stay connected. Furthermore, 70 percent of women and 61 percent of men are concerned about losing their handset. Even though more men than women (47 percent compared to 36 percent) have two or more handsets.

"The first study into nomophobia, conducted four years ago, revealed that 53 percent of people suffered from the condition and our study reveals this has now risen to 66 percent in the UK and shows no sign of abating," said Andy Kemshall SecurEnvoy CTO and co founder

Nearly half (49 percent) said they'd get upset if their partner looked at messages and texts on their handset, although despite this 46 percent revealed they do no secure their mobile phone in anyway. More than two in five (41 percent) use a four pin access code while 10 percent encrypt their device. Just three percent use two factor authentication.

"What this study does highlight though is the extent that people now rely on their mobile phones," Kemshall added.
