Sharp, LG producing QXGA panels for next-generation iPad

Shipments expected to outstrip shipments of XGA panels for iPad 2 by second quarter

Apple has selected Sharp and LG as suppliers of the 2,048 x 1,536 QXGA panels for the next-generation iPad, according to a report.

Digitimes reports that shipments of the QXGA panels began in the fourth quarter of 2011 and will exceed shipments of the XGA (1,024 x 768) panels used in the iPad 2 by the second quarter of 2012, Taiwan-based supply chain makers say.

However, there seems to be confusion as to whether Samsung is supplying panels too - the report specifies "Sharp, LG Display and Sharp", suggesting there has been a mistake. Other reports have suggested that Sharp had actually been dropped as a panel supplier.

Apple will take delivery of 6 - 7 million of the QXGA panels in the first quarter of 2012, up from under one million in Q4 2011, but rising to 10 million in Q2 2012. In comparison, there were 10 million shipments of XGA displays for the iPad 2 in Q4 2011 and there will be 7 - 8 million delivered in Q1 2012.

With production of the third-generation iPad said to have begun, it seems likely that Apple will continue to sell the iPad 2 even when the third-gen model is available.

The report tallies with previous reports that have claimed the new model will have a higher-resolution display. It is also reported that the iPad 3 will have a quad-core processor and an LTE chip.
