Apple TV to get football boost?

The Daily Mail claims Apple is showing interest in acquiring the next set of live TV rights for the English Premier League

The Daily Mail is reporting that Apple is showing interest in acquiring the next set of live TV rights for the English Premier League when the tender goes out before the end of the season.

No evidence or sources are presented to support the claim, but article author Charles Sale suggests the Premier League is the type of premium content that will help establish Apple TV in the UK and boost iPad sales, while the iTunes subscription service infrastructure is already in place.

Sale also expects Google to make a similar bid. "The involvement of Apple - and their great multimedia rivals Google ... would give the PL a hugely competitive market at a time when the price of other TV sports rights are in decline," added Sale.

The article added that broadcasters Sky (the current rights holder), ESPN and Al Jazeera are certain to be bidders for the rights.
