Samsung Galaxy S II named best-selling phone of 2011

Google's Android gathers speed, as Samsung takes the annual sales crown

The Samsung Galaxy S II, has been named the best-selling mobile phone of 2011, by uSwitch.com. See also Group test: what's the best Android phone.

The comparison website uses live sales and search data to rank handsets in order of popularity. The Galaxy S II held onto the top spot for the eighth consecutive month, although Apple's iPhone 4S made a gallant attempt to steal its crown.

Furthermore, five of the top 10 handsets were Samsung-made, proving the Korean manufacturer is a formidable force in smartphone market. Samsung's Galaxy Ace was the third most popular handset in Decmber, while the HTC Wildfire S and Apple's iPhone 4 took the fouth and fifth places respectively.

HTC and Nokia both launched new handsets in November, but the HTC Sensation XE and Nokia Lumia 800 were nowhere to be found in the December chart.

Eight handsets in the top 10 run Android, demonstrating growing interest in Google's mobile platform, which recently overtook Apple as the dominant mobile platform.

"Reviewing 2011, it was an outstanding year for Android phones, which dominated the most popular handset chart," said Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch.com.

"Samsung in particular beat off a strong challenge from the iPhone 4S to secure the Christmas number one spot, with the Galaxy S II in the smartphone sales chart. Disappointingly, RIM's new BlackBerry offerings failed to be enough of a differentiator from the old range to make a mark, while Apple devices, old and new, confirmed their enduring appeal by holding ground in the charts."
