Apple 'to launch 7.85in iPad in 2012'

Report claims new, smaller iPad on the way

Apple will launch a new, smaller iPad next year with a 7.85in screen, according to reports.

Digitimes claims that its sources have revealed Apple's plans to launch a smaller iPad some time before the fourth quarter of 2012 and in addition to a third-generation iPad which will launch in the first quarter.

Apple has been "persuaded into the development of 7.85-inch iPads", Digitimes claims, by the success of Amazon's Kindle Fire and large-screen smartphones.

Displays for the tablets will be manufactured by LG and AU Optronics, the report says. Production is likely to begin towards the end of the second quarter.

The 'iPad mini' rumours keep resurfacing - last month it was the Korea Times telling us that Apple was working on a 7.35in tablet. However, both reports do name LG as the display provider.

According to a report from IDC released this week, the iPad still dominates the tablet market but its share is slipping.
