Onling gaming service OnLive has launched apps aimed at mobile phones and tablets though Apple hasn't yet approved the iOS versions.
OnLive, which officially launched in the UK on 22 September, offers access to around 150 games via a PC, Mac, or the OnLive games microconsole and has today been launched on a range of mobile devices and tablets as well, though Apple hasn't given the app final approval yet.
However, it is thought that this will be a formality and the app should be available in the App Store soon. OnLive has previously stated its intention to bring OnLive to the iPad, though hasn't said anything about the iPhone. Neither the iPad or iPhone were specifically named in OnLive's announcement today.
In fact, OnLive's statement doesn't actually name any specific devices, preferring to talk generically about "tablets and smartphones" instead.
"Today marks a major milestone: OnLive is now delivering the latest, console-class, top-tier gamesliterally to your fingertipson tablets and phones for instant, on-demand play anywhere, anytime," said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO.
"Through the free OnLive app, tablet and smartphone gamers can play top console and PC titles like Assassins Creed: Revelations and L.A. Noireone of the most highly acclaimed, graphically sophisticated games to datewith exclusive OnLive Cloud Touch controls or with the new mobile-compatible Universal OnLive Wireless Controller. Tablets and smartphones, the fastest-growing consumer product categories in history, are now capable of running the hottest, highest-end games. Gaming and mobile devices will never be the same."
Just under a year ago, Apple approved the OnLive Viewer app for iOS, an app that lets you watch others playing games on the OnLive service.
The Android version of the OnLive app is now available in the Android Market. We'll let you know just as soon as it hits iOS.
UPDATE 1115GMT: OnLive told Macworld that it is still awaiting confirmation from Apple and that the iPad app will launch first, followed by the iPhone and iPod touch app at a later date.
