Apple to use new LEDs for next-gen iPads - report

If the iPad 3 has a retina display it will need modified LED light bars

Apple will need new LED back-light solutions for the next-generation iPad if it increases the resolution of the display, according to reports from Apple's supply chain.

Digitimes claims that LED back-light unit vendors are offering two alternatives to Apple for the next-generation iPad.

If the next-generation iPad has a higher resolution than the current 2048 x 1536, it'll require more than the single LED light bar currently used by the iPad 2 to maintain the same brightness of the display.

The first option Apple has is to keep the single bar but use two LED chips rather than one. The second option is to use dual-LED bars, the report says.

The latter option is reported to be Apple's favourite, according to Digitimes' sources. However, it is by no means certain that the next-generation iPad will have an increased resolution, with recent reports stating that Apple planned to released only an upgraded version of the iPad 2 in March 2012.
