The Week in iPhone Cases: California dreamin'

The influx of iPhone 4S cases continues this week, as more and more manufacturers have revised their existing lines of cases to include some exciting new designs. And, of course, most iPhone 4S cases can be used with the iPhone 4, which is great news to those of us who are holding out a bit longer for a completely redesigned handset.

Bella Cases: The Slimfit (iPhone 4S; $27) is a pouch made with a super-thin leather material that allow you to slip it comfortably in any pocket while providing plenty of protection for your handset. It's available in black, blue, green, red, white, or tan.

Speaking of pouches, Bella has also announced he Venetian (iPhone 4S; $35), which features a slightly different design but also focuses on lightweight materials, a snug fit, and the expert design and artisan manufacturing the company is known for. It comes in black or red.

Blachx: This German manufacturer has just released the Eric (all iPhone models; CHF 38.00), a beautiful sleeve that features an elastic closure; a soft interior; and a colorful, faux-leather exterior available in black, white, orange, purple, or gray. Thanks to its flexible design, the case can accommodate pretty much any model of iPhone.

ColorWare: If you happen to have some cash burning a hole in your pocket, you may want to check out the custom work that the folks at ColorWare can do for your iPhone 4S (iPhone 4S; $1,500). The price may seem steep, but that's because they're selling you an iPhone (and not just a case) whose every part has been customized with a splash of color of your choice, including the back, front frame, front button, and even the earbuds. If you already have an iPhone, they'll customize it for you for “just” $250.

The Joy Factory: The Bubbleshield (all iPhone models; $20) is a reusable, waterproof plastic sleeve that works with all iPhone and iPod touch models. It comes in packs of five and it's ideal for situations—such as when you're at the beach—in which your phone might sustain water damage or a more-expensive case could just get unduly damaged.

Otterbox: The company's Defender (iPhone 4S; $50) has been upgraded specifically to work with Apple's newest handset; it features an improved silicone grip that's more robust and durable and affords a better grip than its predecessor. The Defender is available in black, grey/black, gunmetal grey/sun yellow, blue/black, green/black, glacier, or pink/gray.

Red Bubble: This site's quirky art can now be acquired in the form of a protective case (iPhone 4 and 4S; $35 and up), thanks to a partnership with custom-case manufacturer Uncommon. Each case, which features all the appropriate openings for cameras, buttons, and the like, is custom-printed using Uncommon's high-quality process and then shipped directly to customers.

SGP: The Linear (iPhone 4 and 4S; $25) is a case composed of three interchangeable parts—upper frame, lower frame, and back cover—that the company makes available in a variety of colors, including tan, red, pink, light grey, dark grey, green, orange, purple, black, white, and blue. Although you can purchase only one color at at time, you can mix and match parts from different kits for what the company says amounts to 1,452 different unique styles!

Switcheasy: The Card (iPhone 4 and 4S; $30) is a snap-on case made of scratch-resistant polycarbonate that also features a special slot in which you can safely store a smartcard or credit card. Like all of the company's cases, the Card comes with two anti-static screen guards, a microfiber wipe, and silicone protectors for the iPhone's dock-connector port. The Card is available in black, white, or purple.
