iOS chief highly talented but 'maddeningly political' says article

Scott Forstall, head of Apple's mobile software division, scrutinised by business mag

In a week dominated by the iOS and iPhone, it's perhaps fitting that Scott Forstall, Apple's senior vice president of iPhone Software comes under scrutiny in a feature in Bloomberg Businessweek.

Described as the 'Sorcerer's Apprentice at Apple', in a reference to his relationship with the late Steve Jobs, Forstall is rightly praised for his input on the iOS project.

"His name is on about 50 Apple patents that cover everything from how application icons are laid out on the iPhone screen to the method of turning off a device with a finger swipe," runs the report. "On a crucial 2009 patent for a touchscreen device controlled by finger commands, "Forstall, Scott" is listed second, right after "Jobs, Steven P."

However the article makes no bones about Forstall's working manner and his relationship with other Apple staff

Businessweek states that "some former associates of Forstall say he routinely takes credit for collaborative successes, deflects blame for mistakes, and is maddeningly political" and "he has such a fraught relationship with other members of the executive team..that they avoid meetings with him unless Tim Cook is present."

The article ends with an observation that Steve Jobs and Forstall had a close collaboration, with the late CEO clearly taking some pride in the young executive.
