iPhone 5 launch announcement 'to be held at Cupertino'

Media event on 4 October will be on Apple territory

Apple is planning to unveil the next-generation iPhone at a launch event held on its own Cupertino campus, it has been claimed.

The Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital blog, which broke the news of a date for the iPhone 5 announcement - Tuesday 4 October, which is a week tomorrow - now reports that the event will be held at Apple's Cupertino home.

If correct, this marks a change of tradition for Apple - usually, it holds the events at venues in San Francisco such as the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Tim Cook, Apple's new CEO, will be making the announcement, sources close to the company have already told us.

The report speculates that Cook, who will be presenting a new iPhone for the first time, might feel more comfortable on home ground, which is why the Apple Town Hall Auditorium has been chosen.

What we're not sure about, though, is whether it'll be the iPhone 5, the iPhone 4S, or both, that Cook introduces.
