Two in five (40 percent) of the UK's mobile phone owners used an internet-connected app on their handset in April this year.
Research by the GSM Association, which was conducted in conjunction with ComScore, revealed that Google Maps was named the most-popular app, being used by 6.4 million mobile owners, that's 73 percent of all Brits that use smartphone apps.
Yahoo's Weather app was named the second most popular, with 3.6 million users and was closely followed by Facebook's app which had 3.5 million users.
The top five was completed with Google Mobile and YouTube's apps.
The research also revealed 65 percent of those using net-connected apps accessed the software from a device running Apple's iOS mobile platform, while 31 one percent relied on devices running Google's Android OS and just one percent opted for Symbian based devices.
"Apps have become an important entry point for accessing content on mobile devices and their usage will only increase with the rapid proliferation of smartphones," said Henry Stevens, media director, at the GSMA.
