32% access social networks on their mobile

16% of UK mobile owners do so every day

Nearly a third of Brits (32 percent) with mobile phones visit social networks such as Facebook from their handset, says TNS.

According to the market research firm's TNS Mobile Life 2011 report, that's 11 million Brits that social network on the go. Furthemore, 16 percent of mobile phone owners say they access social network from their handset every day.

More than two in five mobile users (41 percent) don't currently social network from their phone but claimed they are interested in doing so.

Furthermore, 31 percent of UK mobile phone owners download apps to their handset, while 29 percent watch social video on their phone and 26 percent download games.

"With social networking emerging as a killer application, mobile content and applications have never been more important. Handset makers and operators take note: it's no longer just about the device or the network, but rather what people are doing and downloading," said Stephen Yap, group director at TNS Technology.

More than a third (36 percent) of handset owners said the content and apps supported by the phone were 'important' when it came to choosing a phone, while 45 percent claim 'design' is also important when selecting a handset.

TNS also said the UK was less interested in tablet PCs than other countries in Europe, with just 17 percent of Brits claiming to be interested in purchasing a tablet in the next six months. Furthermore, the UK also trails when it comes to parting with hard-earned cash for gadgets. Nearly half (49 percent) said they won't be spending on technology in the next six months.

"Brits' comparative scepticism when it comes to tablets affirms the pragmatic relationship between people in this country and their technology," added Yap.

"While consumers elsewhere have been wowed by the iPad, Brits maintain more of a 'wait and see' mindset - no doubt underpinned by pressures on people's purses leading to increasing cutbacks on non-essential purchases."
