Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to hit UK on March 30

Handset will come with six games pre-installed

The Sony Ericsson 'PlayStation phone' will be made available in the UK at the end of March.

The Xperia Play, which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress this year, features a 4in (854x480) display and a 1GHz processor, and runs Google's Android version 2.3, which is also known as Gingerbread. Rather than a keyboard, the gaming phone features a slide-out gamepad.

The handset will come with six games pre-installed including Bruce Lee Dragon Warriors, Crash Bandicoot, FIFA 10 and The Sims 3. A further 50 games will be available through the PlayStation Suite, a cross-platform app store for users of the Xperia Play and the Sony NGP handheld gaming console.

The games will be a mix of retro classics and current popular mobile phone games that have been optimised for use with the device.

"All the mobile operators and retailers are selling [the handset]," Sony Ericsson marketing director for UK and Ireland, David Hilton, told MCV. "It is rare these days to get a product that is sold everywhere, but this is one of those."

Play.com is already offering the device for pre-sale. Priced at £499 SIM-free, the online retailer says the Xperia Play will be released on March 30.
