Google Android outsells Apple iPhone on Tesco

Network sold more Android handsets in February

UK mobile network Tesco sold more handsets running Google Android than Apple iPhones in February this year.

According to Tesco, which piggy-backs on O2's network, before Christmas Apple's smartphone was outselling Android handsets two to one. However, January saw a "rapid increase" in the sales of handsets running Google's open-source mobile platform, which kick-started Android overtaking Apple.

"There is a lot of choice in the market, and as a result consumers are driving healthy competition between rival operating systems," said Graham Harris, CEO of Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile.

"We commend this healthy competition between operating systems as we see this as helping to drive consumer choice and flexibility."
