Facebook denies working on smartphone

Social networking unlikely to launch rival to Nexus One

Facebook has denied it's working on smartphone in a bid to compete with the Google Nexus One and Apple's iPhone.

The web is awash with reports about the social network's plans to move into the mobile phone market, including a story from TechCrunch, which cited sources close to Facebook and said the social network was developing software to be installed on a phone built by a third party.

The report claimed Facebook wants to "integrate deeply into the contacts list and other core functions on the smartphone", although this can only be completed if Facebook controls the operating system.

However, Facebook said it has no such plans.

The social network told CNET: "Facebook is not building a phone. Our view is that almost all experiences would be better if they were social, so integrating deeply into existing platforms and operating systems is a good way to enable this".

Lats week, Facebook made its location-based service, Places, available to UK social networkers.

Similar to FourSquare, users of Facebook's iPhone app or the touch.facebook.com mobile site will be presented with a list of nearby friends and places. From here, social networkers can 'check in' to one of the places and tag any friends that are with them, or add a new location.
