Sainsbury’s releases iPhone apps

Enables customers to receive exclusive, personalised offers

Sainsbury’s has launched two new, free apps for the iPhone.

The two apps provide exclusive, personalised offers to customers who have registered for Sainsbury’s loyalty points programme, Nectar.

iPhone users can download either app, the Sainsbury’s or the Nectar, and both will provide access to the bespoke points offers. They will also provide details of the nearest location for customers to collect and spend points, and customers can monitor their Nectar points balances on-the-go.

In addition, the Sainsbury’s App will provide information about the supermarket’s in-store deals and news.

Sainsbury’s app launch follows that of Tesco, which launched an iPhone app earlier this year that allows customers to store their Clubcard, the Tesco loyalty card on their phone and swipe it at the till instead of the card.

British Airways also recently launched an app that allows Executive Club iPhone users check-in with a boarding pass displayed on their smartphone screen.

In addition, Marks and Spencer launched a version of its website designed specifically for mobile devices in May.

Meanwhile, analyst house Forrester recently warned businesses to carefully consider the benefits of developing an app before succumbing to “application hype”.
