Sony planning PlayStation Portable smartphone

Report claims device will include touch pad

Sony's PSP Go hardware iteration may not have won many fans over, but Sony's Ericsson division is reportedly creating a mobile phone that will utilise many of the platform's strengths to create a new mobile gaming device based on the upcoming iteration of the Google Android.

Engadget has written a story quoting a "trusted source" who claims Sony Ericsson is planning a PlayStation-branded device featuring the current PSP's directional pad and buttons in the same "slide-out" method of the PSP Go. However, the handset will replace the analogue thumbstick with a "long touch pad". The screen will be roughly the same size as the PSP Go's 3.8 inch display.

The rumoured device will have its own section of the Android Market dedicated to selling games Engadget is reporting will "be graphically in the range of PSX or PSP games".

A handful of titles made famous on PlayStation platforms are being demoed with the device, including God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and LittleBigPlanet, according to the report.
