Firefox Mobile 1.1 released for Nokia phones

New features on offer for N900 and N810

Mozilla has released Firefox Mobile 1.1 for Nokia's N900 and N810 models, featuring a host of tweaks to improve browsing on the new smartphone platform.

Running on the open source Maemo Linux used on the the most significant smartphones in Nokia's recent line-up, the maturing of the Firefox browser, codenamed 'Fennec', is a small but important update for both companies.

Users can now switch between portrait and landscape, zoom more cleanly, update add-ons automatically and fill forms with an enhanced autocomplete. Data handling is improved with the ability to save to PDF in the Site Menu and save images by 'long tapping' and holding a link. The release also supports a wider range of browser plug-ins.

Users can already sync between desktop Firefox and Mobile 1.1 using the Weave Sync add-on and setting up an account. This will share bookmarks, passwords, history and open tabs between the two worlds.

Mozilla has been clear about which mobile platforms are important to its development team; Nokia's Maemo and Google's Android. There appears to be some willingness to look at Windows Phone 7 when that appears but that's it. No Blackerry and no iPhone, the latter because of the Apple SDK's tendentious insistence that developer's use Apple's own Javascript engine.
