Amazon Kindle BlackBerry app launched

Application only available in the US initially

Amazon.com has released a version of its Kindle application for BlackBerry users, giving them access to their e-books without a Kindle device.

However, while the Kindle device and service is now available internationally, the free Kindle for BlackBerry application is only available for users in the US. The company didn't say whether it plans to offer a similar application for BlackBerry users outside the US.

The release of the Kindle for BlackBerry application follows the release of a similar iPhone application in March 2009. Both applications allow users to access the Kindle Store and save and sync bookmarks between their Kindle devices, PCs and BlackBerry or iPhone.

Amazon.com plans to add more features to the Kindle for BlackBerry application over time, including the ability to search within books and scroll through books. The company didn't say exactly when these features would be added to the application, just that they will be "added in the near future".

In addition to the BlackBerry, Amazon.com plans to release versions of the application for Macintosh computers and the Apple iPad, which is due to ship next month.
