Toshiba launches TG02 smartphone

Windows Mobile 6 handset on show at MWC

Toshiba has unveiled the TG02, an updated version of its TG01 multimedia smartphone.

From the outside it looks similar to the TG01, which went on sale last year and is recognisable by its large display.

The TG02 features the same 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and, like the TG01, has a 4.1in touchscreen with 800x480 pixel resolution (WVGA).

The resistive touchscreen on the old model has been swapped for a capacitive touchscreen, which should mean smoother performance for users.

On the connectivity side the phone comes equipped with quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G network support.

The 3G support includes high-speed 7.2Mbps download and 5.76Mbps upload. Additionally it has Bluetooth 2.0 and WiFi 802.11b/g.

Other features include a 3.2Mp camera, assisted GPS positioning and a MicroSD card slot to allow for memory expansion up to 32GB.

The phone is based on Windows Mobile 6.5.3, which is one of the latest versions of the Microsoft mobile OS but not the new version unveiled at the show on Monday.

Windows Phone 7 isn't due out until the end of this year, indicating the TG02 will likely be on sale before then. However, Toshiba didn't provide a launch date for the phone.
